CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Director, Medical Staff Office
Leading Not-for-Profit Health System | Medical Staff Services & Physician Affairs
Modesto, California (Central Valley) | Full-Time, Exempt | Monday–Friday, Days | On-Site
Compensation: $129,188 – $193,793 base salary
Plus annual leadership bonus, merit increases, employer-matched retirement savings and pension eligibility
You have spent a career making sure the right physicians are credentialed, privileged and onboarded on time — and you know what it costs when the medical staff office is treated as a back-room processing function instead of the strategic partner it is. Too many MSO leaders run continuous-monitoring, peer review, bylaws and a rising provider census with a team that is short-staffed, tools that were never integrated, and a seat that is nowhere near the executive table.
This role puts the Medical Staff Office where it belongs: at the center of physician strategy for a flagship regional medical center, with executive sponsorship, a growing physician enterprise and the resources of one of California’s most respected not-for-profit systems behind you.
Our client — a Forbes-ranked, not-for-profit health system recognized among America’s Best Large Employers in 2026 and named one of just thirteen California healthcare organizations on the Forbes Best-in-State Employers list — is seeking a Director, Medical Staff Office for its 400-plus-bed Level II trauma center in Modesto. This is a senior leadership seat with direct partnership to hospital administration, the Chief Medical Executive and elected medical staff leaders. You will own the strategic direction and daily operations of the medical staff function: credentialing and privileging, bylaws and governance, regulatory readiness, physician recruitment coordination, onboarding, contracted coverage agreements and physician practice matters.
The campus is in the middle of the most significant investment in its history — a nine-figure cancer center and ambulatory surgery complex under construction, two newly accredited residency programs graduating their first cohorts, and a physician enterprise that added more than a thousand clinicians system-wide last year. Someone has to make sure every one of those physicians is vetted, privileged and productive on day one. You will lead a team that is respected for exactly that — not an isolated compliance function fielding complaints about turnaround time.
▪ A real seat at the table — you report into hospital administration and partner directly with the Chief Medical Executive and medical staff officers on strategy, not just process. Compensation analysis, coverage agreements and recruitment planning run through your office.
▪ Meaningful, growing scope — a Level II trauma and Level II NICU campus, a new cancer center opening 2029, and new internal medicine and family medicine residencies mean the medical staff is expanding — and the leader who builds the infrastructure now shapes it for a decade.
▪ Collaboration built in — you will work alongside physician leaders, quality, risk, legal and system-level medical staff services colleagues across a 25-plus hospital network — a peer community most stand-alone MSO directors never get.
▪ Technology that keeps up — the system runs an integrated Epic environment and has invested heavily in clinical AI and workflow automation, saving more than a million staff hours annually. Your team will not be re-keying the same provider data into three disconnected spreadsheets.
▪ A predictable leadership schedule — Monday through Friday, days, with only occasional weekend needs tied to medical staff events — not a 24/7 operational pager.
▪ An employer that invests in people — 85 percent of employees say this is a great place to work, turnover runs well below the industry average, and leaders at your level are eligible for an annual bonus, tuition reimbursement and pension participation on top of a matched retirement savings plan.
▪ Set and execute the joint strategic direction of the medical staff in partnership with administration and elected medical staff leadership, translating hospital strategy into physician alignment, staffing and governance priorities.
▪ Lead the medical staff office team and its full credentialing, privileging, reappointment and ongoing professional practice evaluation cycle — ensuring turnaround times that get new physicians productive quickly and safely.
▪ Own compliance with the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and all federal, state and accreditation requirements (CMS Conditions of Participation, The Joint Commission, NCQA, California Title 22), and lead survey readiness for the medical staff chapter.
▪ Direct informational and process support for physician policies, department scheduling, compensation analysis, recruitment coordination and onboarding so that physician practice matters are resolved before they become friction.
▪ Evaluate and monitor contracted service and coverage agreements, giving administration a clear, data-based view of physician coverage, cost and performance.
▪ Build durable partnerships with medical directors, department chairs, hospital and system leadership so the medical staff office is the trusted first call — for physicians and for executives.
▪ Develop your team: coach medical staff coordinators and specialists toward NAMSS certification, strengthen workflows, and champion the technology that removes manual burden.
▪ Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
▪ Twelve or more years of recent, relevant experience in medical staff services, credentialing or physician affairs, including progressive leadership of a medical staff office in an acute-care hospital setting.
▪ Working command of medical staff accreditation standards and federal and state regulations governing credentialing, privileging and peer review, and of the operational workflows behind them.
▪ A credible leadership presence with physicians and executives, strong verbal and written communication, and a track record of building effective partnerships across administrative and clinical lines.
▪ Sound understanding of business practices, physician recruitment, compensation and strategic planning as they apply to a hospital medical staff.
▪ CPMSM and/or CPCS certification through the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS).
▪ Experience in a multi-hospital or system-affiliated medical staff structure, including trauma, teaching or graduate medical education environments.
▪ Experience implementing or optimizing credentialing and privileging technology, and familiarity with Epic-based hospital environments.
▪ A record of leading a medical staff office through successful Joint Commission, CMS or state surveys.

Our client is one of the largest not-for-profit health systems in the western United States: more than two dozen hospitals, roughly 64,000 employees, some 12,000 affiliated physicians and clinicians, and about 3.6 million patients served each year across Northern and Central California. It is headquartered in California, founded more than a century ago, and reinvests its margin in care — capital spending topped two billion dollars last year, with more than thirty sites opened or expanded and fifteen groundbreakings.
The Modesto campus is the system’s flagship in the Central Valley: a 400-plus-bed regional medical center with a Level II trauma center, Level II NICU and family birth center, stroke center, comprehensive cardiac, cancer, vascular and orthopedic programs and an accredited surgery center. It has been named a U.S. News Best Regional Hospital for 2025-26, holds a Healthgrades ranking as number two in California for vascular surgery, and earned a Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade of “A” in spring 2026 — a visible quality trajectory that reflects the discipline of the medical staff you would lead. The campus also became the system’s first Central Valley teaching site, with ACGME-accredited internal medicine and family medicine residencies.
The culture is what the awards describe: Forbes America’s Best Large Employers (2026), Forbes Best-in-State Employers for California (2025), Newsweek America’s Greatest Workplaces (2025) and Forbes Best Employers for Diversity. Employees rate the organization 4.0 out of 5 on Glassdoor with 89 percent CEO approval, and 85 percent say it is a great place to work. The system is also a recognized technology leader — an integrated Epic platform, ambient AI documentation for clinicians, and enterprise clinical-AI partnerships — which matters to a medical staff office that depends on clean data and connected workflows.
Modesto sits halfway between San Francisco and Yosemite, ninety minutes from the Bay Area and Sacramento and two hours from the Sierra. The median home sells for roughly $465,000 — a fraction of Bay Area prices — so a director-level salary buys a real house, a real yard and a short commute. The city offers a revitalized downtown with the Gallo Center for the Arts (touring Broadway, the Modesto Symphony), the historic State Theatre, more than a hundred murals, and a Mediterranean climate with year-round farmers markets fed by some of the richest farmland in the state. For a healthcare leader who wants Northern California without a Bay Area mortgage, the Central Valley is one of the last places where the math still works.
